Geoffrey Bratt (1942) died in November, 2024, aged 98. He left King’s to work first at what was then ICI in Blackley, Manchester, though he later moved to the company’s sites in Trafford Park, Linlithgow and Macclesfield, before retiring from Alderley Park 46 years later! Working first on penicillin, then on the best-selling epilepsy drug Mysoline, he took the hard route in Higher Education, via evening classes whilst continuing to work. Higher School Certificate was followed by BSc and then MSc in Chemistry. He had been promoted to Head of Analytic Control at the Macclesfield plant, but then became an International Quality Controller, a job which involved much overseas travel – which he and his wife continued – 43 countries visited in total! – after his retirement in 1988.

(NB He had two sons, who both attended King’s. Ian (1972) left to read Natural Sciences at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge; after further study for a PhD, he emigrated to South Africa in 1981, working there in the Precious Metals industry for 35 years. Chris (1974) also studied Chemistry, part-time at Stockport Technical College while working at ICI Macclesfield. He later moved into the Health and Safety sector).
