Dr. Bryan Lovell (1960) died in September, 2024, aged 82. The son of Bernard Lovell, the founder of Jodrell Bank, he left King’s to read Geology, leaving Oxford University with a Masters degree first for a PhD at Harvard, then to become a lecturer at Edinburgh University, and then, in 1979, to join BP. He was first Chief Sedimentologist, then Exploration Manager for Ireland and then the Middle East, and finally overall Head of Recruitment at BP Exploration.(His OBE in 1989 was for ‘services to British commercial interests in Ireland and to Anglo-Irish relations’). After much further influential work with BP, he eventually left full-time work with them in 1996, moving to take up a senior research fellowship at Bullard Laboratories, Univ. of Cambridge. Bryan was a very strong and well-known advocate of the need to address climate change, believing that carbon capture and storage is essential if net zero by 2050 is to be achieved. His book, ‘Challenged by Carbon: the Oil Industry and Climate Change’, published in 2010, was one of the ways in he generated interest in the subject ; another was via his role as President of the Geological Society in 2010-12 – he was much respected in both industry and the academic world.
