William Albert Hancock

Albert, or William as we knew him at King’s, was a wonderful man who has left his mark on the school – it has been said, once met and never forgotten. A frequent visitor and supporter of school events, William loved sharing emails and selfies with us, well into his 90s.

A bright boy, William won a scholarship and bursary to King’s in 1938, an opportunity his father sacrificed financially to let him take. Though his family couldn’t afford a blazer or sports kit, he excelled academically and athletically. He went on to a civil engineering cadetship at Brighton Technical Institute, where he thrived. Throughout his school years he was outstanding at rugby, becoming a King's house sports captain, and later, a standout player in Brighton, where he was invited to trial for the Harlequins before injury intervened.

Music also played a central part in William’s life. At the age of 10, he discovered a natural gift and a deep love for the violin. He played in orchestras, led ensembles, taught pupils, and performed at every opportunity. His love of music proved an enduring and joyful thread
running through his life.

William explained to us why he felt compelled to leave a gift in his will; “During my time at King’s I was awarded rugby colours at age 14 and was a member of the Magnificent Seven Rugby Team. Successes were brought about because of the excellent tuition and friendliness of the staff. I owe a great deal to King’s in my development from a young boy to manhood. My retirement has been enhanced due to my background at King’s School. I asked myself: “What could I do to repay King’s for all it has done for me?” The answer was clear. To leave a legacy in my will to help pupils, like I was. I implore Former Pupils to do the same as a thank you for all you have received.”

It was wonderful for Jason Slack, Head of Foundation to be able to attend and participate in William's memorial concert in May, which was organised by Newcastle Strings. Rest in peace William, we are so grateful for your generosity.
