Former pupils and staff celebrated generations of friendship and community at the biennial King’s Gala Dinner, held last Saturday in the school’s Jackson Hall, with guests flying in from Dubai and New York.

The Former Pupils Association and Head of Foundation, Jason Slack, hosted the drinks reception and dinner as part of the school’s ongoing ambition to maintain connection to alumni and to raise the profile of the school and its impending 525-year anniversary in 2027.

Welcoming over 130 people to school, ranging in age from 2022 to 1961 leavers, guests included former chief executive of Chelsea Football Club, Guy Laurence.

“The Gala dinner is about reconnecting, celebrating shared memories, and looking forward together.” Said Mr Slack.

“This year, we are reviving a cherished tradition — the term ‘Maxonian’ — to describe our current & former pupils and members of staff. This was a popular term in the 1970s and earlier, and we’re thrilled to bring it back. I hope all Maxonians feel the warmth of fellowship and camaraderie that defines our school.”

The evening also saw former teachers, Alan Batchelor and David Hill, launch their latest edition of “For King’s and Country”, which retells the stories of former pupils that fought in the Great War. As well as their research and book writing, they are supporting the school’s development of a digital archive. Together with main Gala Dinner sponsor, SDS Archive and the school’s archivist, King’s is underway with the significant project that forms part of the impending 525-year anniversary plans.

“We would like to thank everyone who has made this evening possible – especially Matt Forbes, vice chair, King’s FPA, Debbie Dawson and Petrona Clayton of King’s Development and Alumni Relations team, our wonderful Holroyd Howe catering team, our fabulous pianist for the evening, Jack Campbell (2018 leaver) and Springbank Flowers for the splendid table centres. It was a great evening of fellowship, pride and celebration in the spirit of King’s.”

‘For King’s and Country’ is now on sale, available on Amazon and in the following retail outlets:
The Quiet Cat Bookshop, Grosvenor Centre, Macclesfield
Alan at The Book Exchange, indoor market, Grosvenor Centre, Macclesfield
